Electricity Became the Bottleneck Before Anyone Priced It
The International Energy Agency's baseline has data-centre electricity consumption rising from roughly 415 TWh in 2024, or 1.5% of global demand, to about 945 TWh by 2030, with United States demand up approximately 240 TWh. Pouring concrete is straightforward. Securing megawatts on the hyperscaler timetable is not, and that mismatch is how a Wisconsin engine maker became an artificial-intelligence infrastructure story.
JLL's 2026 outlook puts the average American interconnection wait at four years, and roughly seven years for a 100 MW campus in Northern Virginia, against 18 to 24 months to build the shell itself. ERCOT's large-load queue reached about 410 GW in April, three-quarters of it data centres. Capacity requested on paper now vastly exceeds capacity any utility can physically deliver.
SemiAnalysis framed the arithmetic in June: United States data-centre build-out of 21 GW in 2026 rising to 84 GW by 2030, against roughly 15 GW a year of net-new firm grid capacity. Grid headroom, on that view, "turns negative by 2027", with behind-the-meter generation powering "well over half of new US datacenters in 2028+". Every hall still needs backup rated for full load.
The 8-K That Repriced a Generator Company
Generac filed an 8-K on Tuesday evening disclosing that Amazon had agreed to purchase $2.4 billion of its generators across 2027 and 2028, alongside a warrant that continues vesting until Amazon's cumulative payments reach $8 billion. Shares rose more than 40% after hours, opened Wednesday at $229.50 and closed at $207.23, a gain of 18.34%, on eight million shares versus a typical million.
The session was the one in which the Nasdaq snapped its post-Fed losing streak, with AMD up 6.4% and Nvidia up 2.5%. The underlying paperwork comprises a Global Purchase Agreement dated 24 June 2026, a Long Term Supply Addendum signed this week, and a warrant issued to Amazon.com NV Investment Holdings. Supply term, pricing and exclusivity are all redacted.
Inside the Warrant Mechanics
The warrant covers 1,693,745 shares, equal to 2.87% of shares outstanding, struck at $200.9266 for a notional value of roughly $340 million, running seven years to 16 September 2033. At signing, 307,954 shares, or 0.52%, had vested. Ownership is capped at 4.999% of common stock, and a change of control triggers full vesting immediately before closing. The product is industrial backup generators of the "large megawatt" class.
Intrinsic value at Wednesday's close was about $10.7 million, which understates the point. 24/7 Wall St was right that "only $2.4B is contracted", yet Amazon chose to anchor a legal document at the level where it would own 2.87% of a supplier. Chief executive and chairman Aaron Jagdfeld called it "a significant milestone" establishing "a long-term partner for the supply of industrial backup generators to Amazon", citing "our ongoing investments in vertically integrated large megawatt generator manufacturing capacity". Amazon declined to comment.
